Understanding Residential Care
How is a Residential Care Home different from assisted living or a nursing home?
A Residential Care Home is a smaller, more intimate senior care option than a traditional assisted living facility or nursing home in Connecticut. Where larger assisted living communities can house dozens or even hundreds of residents, our adult residential care homes in Connecticut accommodate a limited number of residents, creating a smaller, more personal and genuinely home-like environment.
Unlike a skilled nursing facility or nursing home, we are not a medical institution. Our focus is on providing a safe, comfortable, supportive residential environment where residents can maintain as much independence as possible while having 24/7 staff onsite.
It is important for families to understand that Residential Care Home staff do not provide hands-on, one-on-one personal care services such as bathing, dressing, or other direct physical assistance. However, needing this type of support does not necessarily mean a Residential Care Home is no longer an option.
Our team works closely with residents, families, and outside care providers to coordinate additional services when needed. Depending on a resident’s individual needs and eligibility, support may be brought directly into the home through private home health aides, visiting nurse agencies (VNA), hospital-affiliated providers, or programs such as the Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. Some services may be available at little or no additional cost depending on the resident’s eligibility and insurance or program coverage.
For families in Mystic or Centerbrook and across southeastern Connecticut who want their loved one to feel at home, not in a facility, a Residential Care Home can offer an important balance of independence, community, safety, and coordinated support.
How do families know when it is the right time to consider a Residential Care Home?
Some signs that it may be time to explore a Residential Care Home include increased difficulty managing daily routines independently, concerns about safety when living alone, social isolation or signs of loneliness, difficulty managing medications, a recent hospitalization or fall, or caregiver burnout within the family.
Choosing a senior care home is not about giving up. It is about making sure your loved one has a safe environment, consistent support, social connection, and access to additional services when needed.
We welcome families to reach out and talk through their situation at any time, even if they are not yet sure whether the time is right.
What if my loved one needs hands-on personal care?
Our team can work with residents and their families to coordinate services from outside providers who can come directly into the home. Depending on individual needs, these providers may include home health aides, visiting nurse agencies (VNA), hospital-affiliated care providers, private caregivers, and services available through the Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders.
The Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders is designed to help eligible older adults receive the services and support they need while remaining in a community-based setting. Depending on eligibility, certain services may be available at little or no additional cost to the resident.

Life at Our Home
What does a typical day look like at Harbor Side or Meadowbrook Manor?
Every day at our Connecticut Residential Care Homes is designed around comfort, routine, independence, and connection.
Residents wake up at their own pace and enjoy a chef-prepared breakfast in our shared dining room. Throughout the day, there are opportunities for arts and crafts, music, gardening, socializing, or simply relaxing on the sun porch or in our outdoor sitting areas.
Three home-cooked meals are served daily, with seasonal menus and modified options available for dietary restrictions. In addition to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, residents enjoy two designated snack periods each day: tea time and snack time, creating additional opportunities to gather, relax, and socialize.
Activities, from seasonal celebrations to group day trips and outings to local attractions in Mystic and along the Connecticut shoreline, are woven throughout the week to keep each day engaging and meaningful.
At Meadowbrook Manor, residents also have access to a shopping shuttle with stops including Walmart, Marshalls, and Stop & Shop. We are currently working toward implementing a similar shopping shuttle option for residents at Harbor Side Care Home.
How involved can family members remain in their loved one's care?
Extremely involved. At our adult Residential Care Homes in Connecticut, we believe families are partners, not bystanders.
You are always welcome to visit, share meals, participate in activities, or simply spend time with your loved one. There are no restricted visiting hours.
Our small, boutique setting means our staff gets to know every family personally, and communication between families and our team is open and ongoing. We encourage family members to share their loved one’s preferences, routines, personal histories, and changing needs so that we can help create an environment that feels familiar, comfortable, and supportive.
Can residents bring their own furniture and personal belongings?
Absolutely. Each room at our Connecticut Residential Care Homes comes fully furnished with an extra-large twin bed, nightstand, chair, and armoire, but we strongly encourage residents to personalize their space with meaningful items from home, such as photos, a favorite lamp, a cherished blanket, or decorative pieces that make the space feel like their own.
For residents choosing a private room, larger bed sizes, including full or queen beds, may be available depending on the size and layout of the individual room. Families interested in bringing a larger bed should speak with our team so we can determine whether the selected room can comfortably accommodate it.
A familiar environment can make a significant difference in how quickly a resident settles in and feels at home. Our team is happy to work with families during the move-in process to make the room feel as personal and comfortable as possible.
What amenities are available to residents?
Our homes offer amenities including:
- Free Wi-Fi throughout the building
- An analog/landline telephone in every resident room
- Fully furnished resident rooms
- Shared living and dining spaces
- Indoor and outdoor areas for relaxing and socializing
- Activities, celebrations, and community outings
- Scheduled transportation for appointments and errands
- Three home-cooked meals daily
- Two designated daily snack periods, including tea time and snack time
- Daily housekeeping and laundry services
At Meadowbrook Manor, residents also currently have access to a shopping shuttle with stops including Walmart, Marshalls, and Stop & Shop. We are working toward implementing a similar service at Harbor Side Care Home.
What types of assistance do residents receive?
Our facility staff provides medication supervision, daily housekeeping, laundry services, meals, transportation coordination for medical appointments and outings, activities, and general support throughout the day.
Our team is onsite 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends, and holidays, so residents and families have the reassurance of knowing staff is always present.
Because Residential Care Homes are not skilled nursing facilities, our staff does not provide hands-on, one-on-one personal care. When a resident needs additional physical assistance or healthcare services, our team can work with the resident and family to coordinate outside providers who can deliver those services directly within the home.
What is the process for admission and moving in?
The process starts with a conversation.
We encourage families searching for a Residential Care Home near Mystic, CT or Centerbrook, CT to call or email us to discuss their loved one’s needs and arrange a tour of our home.
After the tour, if it feels like a good fit, we conduct an initial assessment to better understand the resident’s needs and determine whether our Residential Care Home setting is appropriate. If additional outside support may be needed, we can also discuss available options and resources with the family.
From there, we walk families through the residency agreement, pricing, room availability, and logistics of moving in.
Our team is here to make the transition as smooth and comfortable as possible for both the resident and their family.
Most residents are pleasantly surprised by how quickly the home begins to feel familiar and welcoming.
Care, Safety & Practical Details
What is included in the monthly rate, and how is pricing determined?
Residents also enjoy access to our shared living spaces, free Wi-Fi throughout the building, and an in-room analog/landline telephone.
We offer both private and semi-private rooms. Pricing is based on the room type selected, and our team will walk you through everything that is included so you have a clear understanding of the monthly cost.
If a resident requires outside personal care or healthcare services, our team can help families explore available providers and programs. Depending on the individual’s eligibility and coverage, some outside services may be available at little or no additional cost.
For current pricing or to discuss your loved one’s needs, please contact us directly. We’re happy to answer your questions and help you determine the best fit.
What safety measures are in place at your homes?
The safety and security of our residents is one of our highest priorities. Both Meadowbrook Manor and Harbor Side Care Home are designed to provide families with peace of mind while maintaining a warm, comfortable, home-like environment.
Our homes feature:
- 24/7 onsite staff
- Security cameras in all common areas
- Auto-locking exterior doors with secure card-reader access after hours
- Bedroom doors equipped with coded locks for resident privacy and security
- Nurse call buttons located at each resident’s bedside
- Nurse call buttons located in all resident bathrooms
- A full-building backup generator to maintain power during an outage
The nurse call system provides residents with a direct way to alert onsite staff when assistance is needed, including from their bedside or bathroom.
Our full-building backup generator provides additional peace of mind by helping ensure essential building systems can continue operating in the event of a power outage.
Our goal is to provide a safe, supervised environment without sacrificing the welcoming atmosphere that makes our homes feel like home.
How do you handle medical emergencies?
While our adult Residential Care Homes in Connecticut are not medical facilities, we are prepared to respond quickly when a health emergency occurs.
Our staff is trained to recognize warning signs and take appropriate action, including contacting emergency services immediately when needed. We maintain important information for each resident, including their medical history, primary care physicians, specialists, medications, and emergency contacts, so the appropriate information is available when help is needed.
Residents also have nurse call buttons at their bedside and in all bathrooms, allowing them to alert onsite staff when they need assistance.
For routine and ongoing medical needs, we can help coordinate transportation to doctors’ appointments and specialist visits and work with outside healthcare providers who serve residents within the home.
What happens if my loved one's care needs change over time?
We understand that care needs can change over time, and we’re committed to supporting both our residents and their families every step of the way.
If your loved one’s needs increase, our team will work with you to determine what additional services or supports may be appropriate. Because our facility staff cannot provide hands-on, one-on-one personal care, this may include coordinating services from outside providers who can come directly into the home.
Depending on the resident’s needs, available resources may include home health aides, visiting nurse agencies (VNA), hospital-affiliated providers, private caregivers, and programs such as the Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders.
Depending on eligibility, some services may be covered through Medicare, Medicaid, state programs, or other benefits, potentially allowing residents to receive additional support at little or no added cost.
Our goal is to help residents remain comfortably and safely in their home whenever appropriate. If a resident’s needs eventually require a level of skilled nursing care that cannot safely be supported within the Residential Care Home setting, we’ll work closely with the family to help facilitate a smooth transition to the appropriate level of care.
